CRITICAL REGIONALISM.
“The fundamental strategy of critical regionalism is to mediate the impact of universal civilization with elements derived indirectly from the peculiarities of a particular place.”
- Kenneth Frampton
Little Switzerland Road was Alfred Clauss' experiment in modernity, where he built some of North America's first modern homes under modest conditions. The site features dramatic changes in topography, a natural spring, and sweeping mountain views. Just as Clauss incorporated these unique elements into his architectural designs, the challenge was to integrate these same variables into the design of an institution that honors his pioneering contributions to architecture.
